3 Tips To Help New Homeowners Be More Handy Around The House

3 tips to help new homeowners be more handy around the house

If you’ve just bought your first home and want to be able to take care of some of the maintenance or repairs yourself but have never had to do anything like this before, you might feel like there’s going to be a pretty steep learning curve here. And while this might be true, there are things that you can do to help you become as handy as you want to be as quickly as you can.

To help you get to this point, here are three tips to help new homeowners be more handy around the house.

Get Your Mind In The Right Place

While it’s going to be natural that you’ll feel intimidated by some of the tasks and projects that you might want to be taking on as a new homeowner, your attitude toward these projects can have a big impact on how everything ends up going.

Ideally, you should try to come to any project wanting to learn as much as you can, committed to doing the project right, and doing your best to get the results that you want. If you are only wanting to do what you can but know that you’ll want to fall back on someone else once the work gets hard, you may not put in the effort necessary to really learn and grow. So before you take on a project, make sure it’s something you can start in the right mental space.

Get Some Basic Tools

In order to do a lot of the projects that you’ll have to take care of around your house, you’ll need to have some basic tools readily available to you. And while you might need to get some specialized tools for some things, like if you’re needing to replace a drain stopper or clean out your gutters, most of the basic tools you’ll want to have can take care of your basic needs.

As a good place to start, you should begin building your tools with things like a hammer, some screwdriver, a set of sockets, pliers, a drill, a tape measure, and a level. With these things in tow, you should be able to do most basic repairs. Then, as your need expands, you can get more specialized tools.

Don’t Throw Away The Instructions

When you get a new part, materials, or tools that you’ll be using around your house, be it for a structural part of the home or something like an appliance, it can be tempting to just assume that you know how to use it and what needs to be done. However, many people have made big mistakes thinking this way. So rather than tossing out the instructions and user’s manuals for everything, make sure you keep these items in a safe place that you can refer back to when needed to save you time.

If you’re wanting to be more handy now that you own your own home, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you with this.
